  • Euah STADOME Baptism: 28 Sep 1606 Monks Risborough, BKM
Could Euah (weird name) actually be Joane who should be on the baptisms lists for this sort of time but isn't?

William KINGE Christening: 25 Jan 1601 Monks Risborough, BKM : Burial: 1657 or 1667 Monks Risborough, BKM
Married: 31 Jan 1619/1620 in Monks Risborough, BKM : Joan STADOME b: ABT 1607 in Monks Risborough (Burton), BKM : Burial: 21 Dec 1688 Monks Risborough (Askett), BKM
- Aged 13 yrs at marriage (Not uncommon in those days). The Parish Records amusingly give her name as John.

William Kinge Baptised Sunday 25 January 1601

William, who lived through the last years of the Elizabethan period, is the first ancestor who can be found in the Parish Baptism, Marriage and Burial Records. His Marriage record attributes him to Burton, at the very heart of the village, but other records call him "William of Meadle", and I feel that this is the more accurate, since he was a Farmer. Meadle was a well-detached hamlet northwest of the village.

Grouped under "Monks Risborough" also were the hamlets of Askett (Ascott), Whiteleafe (Whitecleefe / Whitecliff) up on the hill roads east of the village where the ancient hill figure of a cross still dominates, and Green Hailley (Green Alley or even sometimes even Green Highlands) which lies even further to the south-east.

Meadle was primarily associated with agriculture (although later some of the Kings of Meadle were carpenters). Due to the ready accessibilty of good timber the Whiteleefe and Green Hailley Kings were almost all carpenters.

The surname KING (and its early counterparts, KINGE/KYNGE) is quite widely spread throughout Buckinghamshire. Even in the small agricultural village of Monks Risborough in the Chilterns it was strongly represented. Just to confuse the researcher further, the KINGs here seemed to favour a very limited choice of forenames!!

This William, one of FIVE Williams living in Monks Risborough village and its associated hamlets at the time is "William of Meadle" ( OR "William of Burton"). A second William of Meadle who married later had to be written up by the Vicar of the day as "William of Meadle by ye Pound".

The others were "William of Whiteleafe", "William of Catsdeane" and "William of Askett". This not only gave the poor old devil-dodger a hard time, but creates a tangled web for today's family historian: however, I think that I've unravelled the web as accurately as possible.

Although no specific data is known, William and his namesakes mentioned here were quite probably impressed on one side or the other in the Civil War Battle of Aylesbury Vale, 1642 in which the Roundhead forces beat those of the Royalists led by Prince Rupert.

  • Joane KINGE b: in Monks Risborough(Meadle), BKM c: 27 Dec 1620 in Monks Risborough, BKM
Married: 27 May 1644 in Great Kimble, BKM Roger Butcher Marriage is tenuous!

Assume she married outside of the parish since no trace found in Monks Ris records of a likely marriage, or of a death as Adrian KING ... EXCEPT FOR: Spouse: Robert TAILER . Marriage: 6 May 1633. Monks Risborough, (IGI) Which is only possibly for this Adrian if she was a late baptiser

BFHS Marriages show a marriage between John King of Meadle and this wife 1674. IGI in 1673; IGI shows her christened at date above, daughter of Edward Neighbour

John, with his parents and siblings lived through some VERY turbulent times. He'd have known the reign of Charles I, lived through the Civil War, the Commonwealth under Cromwell, plus the rule of Charles II and James II. Towards the end of that latter reign he'd have known of the Monmouth Rebellion and the horrors that followed its failure, with "Hanging Judge Jefferies" wreaking James' revenge upon the Duke of Monmouth's supporters.

Thousands of these poor souls were not simply executed, but were hung, drawn and quartered !! This was no quick and easy death. First they were slowly hoisted aloft to choke, almost but not quite, to death. The next step was to cut open their bellies and remove their contents . Not content with the preceeding vileness the authorities (and it must be said, the crowds of "spectators") then insisted upon the victims being quite literally pulled apart limb by limb.

The "lucky" ones, perhaps just common foot soldiers who'd just happened to be on the losing side, were maybe spared these atrocities. They were just hanged and their bodies left to rot, often enough from shop signs in the towns which had supported Monmouth.

Although its ravages did not really spread deeply into Buckinghamshire,John must have been aware of the terror of the Plague which decimated the population of London in 1664 and 1665. In the city and its environs the disease claimed over 75,000 lives. He must also have known of the Great Fire of London, which, beginning with a stray spark in a bakery in Pudding Lane, swept from one close-packed timber building to another until it had consumed some 80 percent of the city.

It was in the reconconstruction which followed The Fire that some of London's greatest buildings were designed and erected, perhaps most notably Sir Christopher Wren's St. Pauls Cathedral .... although I don't suppose that John would have known much about that.

Happily, in his declining years, John may also have seen something of the more enlightened rule of William and Mary.
