1935 Death in the Sub-district of Aylesbury, in the County of Buckingham
Twenty first October 1935, 100 Bierton Hill, Aylesbury
Jane Jemmett, female, 78 years, of 24 Green Road, Terriers, High Wycombe, widow of George Jemmett a domestic gardener.
1(a) broncha pneumonia & myocardial degeneration, certified by D W L Dale, MD
informant: J. Walker, occupier, 100 Bierton Hill, Aylesbury. Sixth November 1935. Thomas Foster registrar.
100 Bierton Hill (now Bierton Rd) was the Aylesbury Workhouse, details can be found at: http://www.workhouses.org.uk/. . . /Aylesbury.shtml

from Bucks County Council archivist:

Aylesbury Workhouse (or Poor Law Institution) was located at number 100 Bierton Hill.  It was built in 1844 and remained in operation until the 1940s.  Although workhouses were originally places for all paupers by the 1930s most of the people resident there were elderly or sick.  Aylesbury workhouse became Tindal Hospital in the 1940s.  This remains on the same site and some of the original buildings are still standing.

It would be unusual for individuals to be sent to an institution in one area when they were resident in another.  The Guardians of the Poor, who administered the workhouse, did not normally accept people from other areas.  This Office holds the surviving records from Aylesbury workhouse but there are large gaps.  The last minute book ends in 1930 and no records are held for 1935.   I regret that no other sources are held here which might explain why [Jane was] in Aylesbury Poor Law Institution even though [she was] from High Wycombe.
