Looking up to the top of Mardol. The 'Fancy Warehouse' where Jane lived and worked in 1871 was probably on the right.
The ugly modern block replaced an older building of a similar shape and the road wasn't pedestrianised. The sculpture - 'The Darwin Gate' was erected in 2004 - Charles Darwin was born just up the road.

The cafe/bakers on the corner says 'Bakers since 1838', though it doesn't say if they have been in the same place all that time.
This was probably opposite Jane's warehouse which was on the left, just off picture.

The view from inside the cafe/bakers towards the site of the warehouse, the roads were all in the same place on the 1882 map, apart from the pedestrianised area.

Halfway down 'Historic Mardol'

The River Severn and Welsh Bridge at the bottom of Mardol. Described in the 1871 Census as 'Mardol Quay'.
