Notes for HARDY CURTIS MILLER:
Enlisted, First Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers (Spanish War) on the 30th June 1898, discharged on Oct 16 1898 . There had been a epidemic of Icterus (Jaundice) and apparently Hardy had received a severe dose. His address at the time of joining was given as 292 Manchester Street, Manchester, and father as John S Miller, Brushton, New York. John his brother Richard and their father Robert all served in the Vermont 7th Regiment, Company F during the American Civil War.
Hardy then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, at Massachusetts, Boston, on 21st April, 1899 and was assigned the U.S.F.S. Brooklyn. When the ship arrived in Melbourne, Australia for Federation Celebrations Hardy "jumped ship" on May 10th 1901.
Hardy made his way to Violet Town, a small farming community North East of Victoria,, there he married Verna White on the 18th January 1905, he was age 29 and Verna 20.
Hardy's parents are shown as John S Miller, (farmer) and Lucy Miller (Shambo/Shambeau)
Verna was a daughter of William Henry White And Clara Ann White (Murray).
Hardy became Naturalized on 23rd August 1910, at Violet Town. He stated he was an American Citizen, and had arrived in Melbourne from Manilla, per the "Brooklyn" in 1901.
So he had sworn the truth about his arrival, only leaving out that he deserted. I do not think many questions were asked as this country was under populated, also he did also state that his residence since arrival was Baddaginnie which is next to Violet Town.
He enlisted in the Australian Infantry, W.W.1 and served for a short period in New Guinea. Before his death he was a patient in The Repatriation Hospital, Heidelberg, this hospital is for ex servicemen. While a patient he was discovered by "the Americans"? who according to one of his daughters treated him like a long lost son, so apparently all was forgiven.
