Edwin & Fanny's marriage Certificate

This photo is captioned "Charley Gower, Hythe" - possibly in Arthur Gower's handwriting. My grandmother [Lizzie], who inherited the photo, has added "My cousin. Died of cancer. Note the dress of a farm worker, about 1910"

From Sue & Ann:
Edwin Boyce Gower married Fanny Amos February 22, 1879 in Saltwood Church, daughter of John Finnis and Eliza Watchus. She was born November 19, 1850 in Saltwood. Edwin died November 20, 1906 in Saltwood, Kent. Buried November 26, Saltwood.

Notes from Sue: Edwin Boyce Gower was a blacksmith and had a business in Chapel St. at the back of the Red Lion Pub in Hythe, now known as the Waters Edge. He was a big man, I can remember being told by Grandma Alice Kate Gower, nee Russell, that he weighed 28 stone. A lot of his work was shoeing horses that pulled the trams along the Hythe sea front. He employed 2 men.

George GOWER
, b. Dec 13, 1882, Newington, died April 8, 1943, Saltwood, buried April 1943, Saltwood.
Notes from Sue: George Gower went by the name of 'Snowy' as he was very fair of skin and hair, he was a builder in partnership, and the business was called Gower and Piper. When my parents Doris and George Gower [son of this George] were married he built their house 'Overdale', Stodmarsh Rd., Canterbury overlooking the first fairway of Canterbury Golf Course, it was a solid house and when the neighbour next door but one was bombed in the second worl war it was said the roof lifted up and settled down again as if nothing had happened.
George was in the Hythe Town Band he joined as a boy, and was in it most of his life. The Hythe Cricket week was a big week for the region, culminating in the Hythe Venetian Fete, and the band was in great demand. There was a Ladies Walk that was all lit up on Sunday nights in the summer, where people slowly walked up and down. The cricket ground was between the sea and the canal. The Fete was held on the Military canal and all the people sitting on the bank to see. I remember seeing it many times as a young girl myself.
One of the last memories of Grandad was him playing tunes for me on his squeeze box when we went to see them, usually on a Sunday evening when my father finished work. He could play all sorts of musical instruments.
George was in the First World War, serving in the Royal Engineers and the Tank Corp.

She only had the one child and said: "one was enough, too painful my dear".
