from Rosemary:
Friend Baker was married to Esther Hobbs, sister of my great grandmother, Charlotte.  There was a typhoid epidemic in Maidstone in 1897: Esther contracted the disease and died.  Shortly before this, Charlotte's husband, Edward, also died, though not of typhoid.  As a result, Charlotte moved in with Friend as his housekeeper, taking with her her youngest son Frederick.  She was then carer for Friend's daughter Phyllis, and the girl boarded out from Linton Workhouse, Selina Grinsted.
