Marriage Jun 1838 Bateson, Samuel ; BRADLEY, Jane; Leeds 23 327
Marriage Certificate
1838. Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of Leeds in the County of York.
June 9, 1838
Samuel Bateson, full age, Bachelor, Bookkeeper, North Hall Street, Joseph Bateson, Clothier
Jane Bradley, full age, spinster, - Trinity Street, William Bradley, Maltster
Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church by licence by me Rev. Taylor, Curate.
This marriage was solemnized between us, Sam Bateson, Jane Bradley, in the presence of us, William Naylor?, Ellen Heselton?

This have been one of the last marriages in the old church:

St. Peter's Leeds C1838. This watercolour sketch by John N. Rhodes (1809 - 1842) shows the Nave of Leeds Parish Church with the Altar in the distance. In the foreground the font can be seen standing on a raised dias. It is octagonal in shape and a padlock is carved on each face symbolising baptism as being the key to Christianity. This view of the Church shows the haphazard way the galleries had been erected, almost cutting through the fourteenth century clustered columns. There were far too many pews and pens of varying shapes and sizes. The galleries were accessed by dark stairways and the Chancel arch against which the organ of 1714 was positioned, was almost walled up. The watercolour records the old Church before the re-building which commenced in 1838. The artist was a patron at this time. (more small images & descriptions)

North Hall Street where Samuel was living:

Undated, Photo taken prior to clearance in the late 1950s. This was the odd numbered side of the street, which ran between Burley Road and Kirkstall Road. It had been partly demolished prior to 1939, when the Second World War had halted a previous slum clearance programme in this area. To the left the White Building which is just visible was the Springfield Tavern, numbering begins next with 3, then moving right is in ascending order in the direction of Kirkstall Road.

Jane was living in Trinity Street when she married, but we don't know if this was with her family, or whether she was working there. By 1841 her father was running a pub in Beeston.

Undated. One of set of 'Six Etchings of the Streets of Leeds' by S.Wagstaffe. Shows Trinity Street.
[text from a 1930 photo] number 22 was the Ostlers Arms. At number 23 were George Rushton's Dining Rooms. Number 24 was multi-occupied including Marshall Brothers carriers, and P. Thomson shipping agent. Number 25 was also used by various companies including James H. Thompson engraver, Arthur Myers printer and the Atlas Express Company. Johnson's Engravers Ltd, was number 12. Yorkshire Evening News newspaper and publishing company occupied numbers 13 to 17.

Undated. Early view of Bedford Place showing terraced properties on the even numbered, east side. Bedford Place joins Park Lane next to number 58 Park Lane, the Bedford Hotel. Central to the image is a horse drawn milk cart, the business of George Moss of 15 Airedale Place, off West Street. The milk is transported in a large churn, seen on the cart, and individual householders would bring a jug or other vessel to have filled. George Moss is likely to be one of the gentlemen standing on the pavement. Flights of steps lead up to the doorway of the houses where several people can be seen. These houses were demolished and on a 1952 O.S. Map Marlbeck House Clothing Factory occupies the site. Number 32 Bedford Place is in the centre and, at this time, it was the home of Addyman Parkin Barker, a woodturner and sawyer with a workshop in Mills Yard, Great Wilson Street. The photographer is the son of Addyman Barker, Adolphus Parkin Barker.
