Henry King 2 Woolston, Hampshire, England Grandson Saddleworth Yorkshire

- We don't know why the Farrer family moved around so much but, if Joseph was an electrical contractor then he may have been involved with installing electric lights to replace the old gas lamps in these towns. Some later records mention a telephone company - or possibly something similar which could explain the constant moving every two years.

We know that Jessie, age 23 in 1901, became substitute mother to her three young half-brothers, aged 6, 4 and 2, and no doubt looked after her father as well.

In 1901 Alice was visiting her family on the night of the census, March 31, now at Greaves Farm, Thurston Clough, W. Yorks, Saddleworth Moor, NE of Manchester. Alice visited with her son, Henry, now 2, but not Mr. King. Louisa had very recently died and the family moved, again, so Alice may have gone back for the funeral and to give support.

Henry was born in Woolston which is very close to Southampton docks, the world's biggest merchant navy port in 1901, his father Thomas King was a clerk for a corn merchant, probably importing corn from North America.

During or soon after 1901 Alice returned to Mr. King in Southampton where Joseph (1905), Dolly (1907) and Mary (1911) were born.

see John Gower for more about Alice

1907 - Henry Farrer (b.1880) emigrated to New York with his wife Lavinia and 10 month old daughter Jessie.

It was probably following the marriage of Percy and the death of Arthur, that their sister Jessie Farrer (b.1878), who had not married, moved from Yorkshire to stay with older sister Alice and her daughters for some time in Gosport, Hampshire. She had no money and Alice was unable to support her so she went to live with Alice's son Henry and his family in Portsmouth. From there she became a housekeeper for Ernest Pitt, and then married him in 1931, at the age of 53, eventually inheriting his house.
