Mary was the daughter of Jabez Stead, Maltster, deceased in Farnley between 1780 and 1782. In his will (dated 1777) he names his wife and children:
Isabel (or Isabella) (born Farrer)
Jonas Stead (only surviving son, from whom I descend) (above 21 years old in 1777)
Hannah Stead (above 21 years old in 1777)
Mary, the Wife of Thomas Bateson,
Ann Stead, (less than 21 years old in 1777)
Isabel Stead, (less than 21 years old in 1777)
Betty Stead and (less than 21 years old in 1777)
Sarah Stead (less than 21 years old in 1777)
Also indicates that "Also I nominate and appoint my Brother Samuel Stead, Walter Farrar and Samuel Farrar as Trustees " and later the documents states:
Exec. of the Will of Jabez Stead late of Farnley, p. Leeds deceased was granted to Samuel Farrar his Brother in Law one of the Executors
