from Ann:
Joseph Bateson [1868], son of Joseph Bateson [1834], operated the Roan Tannery in Meanwood Leeds, but died as a result of a road accident.
- Newspaper report of poor quality from October 1941, which details the accident (use 200% magnifier to read...).
Joseph [1868] and Thomas [1860] were brothers who both worked in the leather industry. The tannery remained in business until the mid-nineteen-sixties. Thomas left to become a gardener, after his health suffered with the fumes from the industry. He became a tenant/gardener at Plumpton Rocks, Knaresborough in 1904, until his death in 1922.
Thomas Bateson [1860]
married Mary Ann Atkinson [born Plumpton 1860]. They had two children Marie 1898 and Ida 1891, both were born in Leeds. The 1901 census transcribes my grandmother's name incorrectly as Maria.
Thomas also had two sisters, Mary Lupton Bateson 1870 and Jane Bateson 1865. Jane married twice firstly Henry Voce and then William Acomb. His other brother was John Darnley Bateson 1858, who married Hannah Lynch.
