Name: William Wilkes ; Sex: M Name: Mary Fitzgerald ; Sex: F Name: Grace Wilkes ---- from John: . . . the link between Grace and her 'grandfather' is somewhat speculative. The story passed down in our family is that Mary Fitzgerald was the daughter of Pierse/Pierce Fitzgerald, a radical (i.e.anti-English) poet in Cork during the 18th century. (See, for example, http://www.goireland.com/genealogy/scripts/Family.asp?FamilyID=125). I've tried to validate this, but without success. One of the attachments below states it's true, but I'd like to see some official documentation. We went over to Cork a few years ago - and I even went to Pierse's grave high on a hillside east of Cork - but there was nothing else there that fitted in. As you'll see, some of the other information is pieced together from the usual online sources, but I'm quite cautious in 'accepting' this.
----- This is the only Mary Fitzgerald on IGI that fits, but it was probably a fairly common name.....: MARY FITZGERALD There were very many Wilkes in Ireland and none that match, was he English? They moved to Swillington/Rothwell, near Leeds. The only Yorkshire born William Wilkes ages between 20-30 in 1784 on IGI were: William Wilks WILLIAM WILKS WILLIAM WILKS |
